Joanne Mary Jarrett Bruns, 94, a native of Boston who lived most of her life in 
Norfolk, died June 15, 2023, in a local hospital.
After graduating from Holy Trinity Catholic High School, she worked for C&P 
Telephone Co. in a number of positions. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse 
later in life and served mainly as a hospice nurse.
She was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she served as 
choir member, cantor, Eucharistic minister, and special needs religion teacher, 
and she was also on the parish council. She was a member of the Secularized 
Order of Discalced Carmelites and was active in Cursillo. She also enjoyed her 
time as a chaplain at DePaul and Maryview hospitals.
She had a beautiful soprano voice, sang with the Sweet Adelines, and performed 
in local variety shows with her husband, John.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, John J. Bruns; a daughter, Jane 
M. Bruns; and a son, Dr. John J. Bruns Jr., MD MPH. She is survived by a 
daughter, Elizabeth A. Bruns of Norfolk; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Sinclair 
Ballew Bruns, and a grandson, Nicholas Bruns, both of Livermore, CA; a sister-
in-law, Merle Bruns of Chesapeake; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Fr. James Glass at Holy Trinity 
Catholic Church, Norfolk, at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 7. Graveside service will 
follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norfolk. Donations may be made in her memory to 
Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Online condolences may be offered to the family at
