John was a 1978 graduate of Holy Trinity School and a 1982 graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School. He received a Bachelors of Science from Old Dominion University, a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and a master's in public health from Columbia University, where he completed a neuroepidemiology fellowship. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City. He was an assistant professor of emergency medicine at The Mount Sinai Medical Center and was an Emergency Department attending physician at Mount Sinai Hospital. His research interests included the epidemiology and treatment of neurological emergencies, with particular focus on traumatic brain injury and stroke. He was a sidelines emergency physician for the New York Jets. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sandra Sinclair Ballew Bruns, and their son, Nicholas Sinclair Bruns, both of New York City; his parents, John J. and Joanne J. Bruns of Norfolk; two sisters, Elizabeth A. Bruns of Chesapeake and Jane M. Bruns of Norfolk; his parents-in-law, Richard F. and Cynthia Sinclair "Kat" Ballew of San Ramon, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Alicia Ballew Montell and her husband, Eric, and Allison Ballew Nelson and her husband, Erik, all of California; five nieces and nephews; a large and loving extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by the Rev. Dan Beeman and the Rev. Michael Duffy at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Norfolk. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John's memory to the American Heart Association.
