Col. USAF Ret, of The Ballentine passed away Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 in a local convalescent center. He was born in Swan Lake, Arkansas to the late William E. Brunson, M.D and Elizabeth Ledbetter Brunson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lena Baylor Brunson after many happy years of marriage. Two brothers, Robert E. Brunson Comdr. USN Ret of Virginia Beach, VA,, James F. Brunson, Cmdr. USN Ret, if Baton Rouge, LA and his sister Eloise Brunson McCall of Lonoke, AR. During his early years he attended a one room country school before advancing to other schooling. He attended Heidelburg University in Germany. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor degree in military science. He graduated from Old Dominion University with a Masters in Guidance and counseling. He also graduated from the Air Force Command and Staff school. After retiring from the Air Force and the Norfolk School System, he and his wife Lena traveled extensively throughout the world. He is survived by his daughter Patricia A. Brunson of Springdale Arkansas, step daughter Anne N. Phillips of Norfolk, VA., and five grandchildren, Kyndl Brunson of London, England, Tasha Horton of Fort Worth, Texas. Richard Brunson Phillips and his wife Stacy of Missouri City, TX, Brooke Phillips Garrett and her husband Brent of Norfolk, VA and Jeffrey Gibson Phillips and his wife Erin of Norfolk, VA. as well as five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in law, James E. Baylor, Sr. and his wife Marion and several nieces and nephews. During his service career, he served in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam. He was also stationed in London, England, Germany and the Philippines. He was a Master parachuter in the Air Force. One of his primary missions was intelligence operations. He also investigated Unidentified Flying Objects and served with the CIA. He received parachuting badges from the US Air Forces, South Korean Armed Forces, Vietnamese Armed Forces and the Philippines Armed Forces. He also received the highest Korea award, the Ulchi Metal, given to high ranking foreign officers and numerous Air Force medals and awards. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk with the Rev. Sarah R. Wastella officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507. H.D.
