John was a devoted, kind and loving husband and father who was known for his quick wit and ready smile. He was a lifelong and active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Norfolk, and graduated from Holy Trinity High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. His accomplishments included president of Barnum-Bruns Iron Works Inc.; president of the Virginia Association of Contractors; president of the Fabrication Association of Tidewater; director of the Builders and Contractors Exchange; vice president of St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk; and a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and performed in many shows for that group. He was preceded in death by his son, Dr. John J. Bruns Jr., M.P.H.; his parents, Raymond H. and Margaret M. Bruns of Norfolk; and two sisters, Margaret B. Noga and Helen B. Bowerman. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joanne Jarrett Bruns; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Bruns, of Chesapeake and Jane M. Bruns, of Norfolk; a daughter-in-law, Sandra S. Bruns of New York City; a grandson, Nicholas S. Bruns of New York City; a brother, Raymond H. Bruns, and wife, Merle, of Chesapeake; a sister, Shirley B. Gillikin, of Evans, Georgia; and a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by the Rev. Dan Beeman at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 155 W. Government Ave., Norfolk. The family will receive guests one hour prior to services. A reception will follow services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church or to a charity of one's choice.
