Oliver Funeral Apts. April, 2024 Hilda Bell Brush, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the age of 100. Born and raised in Dunn, North Carolina, the youngest of five daughters to Willis Claude and Juneutta Owens Bell, Hilda was proud of whence she came. Her four sisters remained a big part of her life for their lifetimes, and after their passings. The word “catholic” applied to Hilda on multiple levels; with a big C, for her allegiance to the Roman Catholic Church, but also with a little c, to describe her eclectic interests and avocations. Through her lifetime she enjoyed exercising, vegetable gardening, history, crafts like crocheting and ceramics, volunteering with her church, reading, televised boxing, and music. She particularly enjoyed music appealing to her Irish heritage, including the Irish Tenors and her beloved Daniel O’Donnell. She especially loved animals. She approached much in her life with an abundance of vigor and with an interesting brand of humor. Predeceased by her parents, sisters Elsie Hoggard, Marguerite Southerland, Maggie Ireland and Hazel Parnham Foltz, and husband of 67 years, Alfred Paul Brush, Hilda is survived by two daughters, Carol Anne Cary, and Janet Lee Gerney; five grandchildren, George Douglas Miller Cary III, Lee Cary Chase, Joseph Anthony Gerney, Jennifer Ann Gerney and Mary Elizabeth Shute; and many great-grandchildren. A graveside service with be conducted Tuesday, May 7 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at a viewing on Monday, May 6 at 5:00 pm at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home in Norfolk, Virginia.
