She was born Maria Isabel de Brito on February 12, 1927 in Praia da Vitoria, Terceira, Azores. Isabel was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Lourdes de Brito; father, Francisco Soveta; and husband, William "Bill" George Burchell. She is survived by her sister, Maria Lubelia de Brito of Angra, Terceira, and her brother, Alvarino Aguiar, of Praia da Vitoria, Terceira. Two daughters, whom she loved fiercely, also survive Isabel. They are Jeannie Frieden (Bruce) of Virginia Beach and Liz Zaccagnini (Warren) of Manassas, Virginia. Isabel cherished her three grandchildren: Warren Joseph (Joe) Zaccagnini, Jr., of Warrenton, VA; Katie Frieden, of New York City, and Anna Frieden, of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Isabel was known as a selfless, funny, feisty, proud and independent woman. She loved animals and enjoyed cooking, sewing, and crocheting. She was a long-time member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of Virginia. As a newlywed, Isabel came to a new country - unable to speak the language - and yet raised two daughters while celebrating all the American holidays and maintaining her Portuguese roots. Of her many accomplishments, Isabel was deeply proud of becoming an American citizen. But, above all, Isabel's greatest joy was being a mother to Jeannie and Liz. The family wishes to extend our gratitude to the entire staff and extended family at the Memory Unit within the Terrace at Beth Sholom Village and the talented team at Medi Home Health & Hospice for taking such loving care of our mother. Special thanks to Donna Burdell and Ella Matthews for tending to our mother with tenderness and dedication. Funeral arrangements are being handled by H.D. Oliver. A viewing will be held from 7:00-9:00 pm on Sunday, May 15th, 2016 at H.D. Oliver, 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk, VA. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, May 16th, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1803 Columbia Ave. in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests a donation to Beth Sholom Village or your local SPCA.
