Shelia Burke, 85, died peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, on Friday, 
March 27, 2015. Shelia was born in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland, to Patrick and 
Bridget Donovan Kelly. She traveled to the United States as a young Registered 
Nurse, where she met and married Gene Burke and began a family.
Shelia was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; brother, John; and sister, 
Bridie. She is survived by six siblings: Noel (Lenora), Hessie, Joe (Emma), Peggy, 
Eileen (Tom) and Michael (Margaret). Left to cherish her memory are one son: Sean 
Burke, four daughters: Patricia Thorsen (Mark), Ann Ripley, Jean Burke and Kerry 
McCauley (Glenn), and six grandchildren: Ryan Howlett, Jessica Thorsen, Trenton 
McCauley, Sydney McCauley, Chris Ripley and Matt Ripley (Kathryne). Also surviving 
Shelia are many special friends, in-laws, nieces and nephews, in both Ireland and 
the United States. She will be greatly missed by all.
Shelia commented several times during these past few weeks that she had been 
blessed with a "most wonderful life", thanks to her great family and many friends. 
She was an adventurous spirit who loved to travel (especially to her beloved 
homeland of Ireland), garden and entertain. Additionally, she cherished years of 
Monday evenings with her very special Knitting Club comrades.
The family would like to thank the staff of both Virginia Oncology Associates and 
Bon Secours DePaul Hospital for their exceptional care, compassion and support 
throughout the past few weeks. Memorial donations in honor of Shelia may be made 
to The Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater.
The family will receive visitors at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive 
Chapel, Norfolk, VA, on Monday, March 30, from 6-8 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection 
will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Norfolk, VA, on Tuesday, March 31, at 1 
p.m. A graveside service will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in 
Norfolk, VA. A reception to honor Shelia will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the 
Lafayette Room of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Norfolk, VA.
