Burton, cousin of Prof. George W. Braye, of Bolton street, passed away Monday, September 14th, at the Protestant Hospital. Very impressive were the funeral services held for her in the St. John’s A. M. E. Church, of which she was a member, Thursday afternoon, September 17th. Dr. Young, the pastor, conducted the services assisted by Revs. B. W. Harris, of Grace Episcopal Church, and D. F. White, of the First United Presbyterian Church. The pastor in his sermon dwelt on the beauty of her Christian character, her patience in suffering and her cheerfulness to the end. Rev. White spoke of the fine evidence her life gave of the reality of Christianity and the power of Jesus Christ to save men. Mrs. Mary Fisher sang very effectively: “Face to Face.” The pall-bearers were: Messrs. H. T. Dickey, C. C. Dogan, Samuel Tucker, William Thomas, Atty. W. H. Melvin and Criss Palmer. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in the family plot by the side of her aunt, Prof. Braye’s mother. Mrs. Burton had lived in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Lewis, of Mowbray Arch, for fourteen years. Her character and service were such as to win the confidence, respect, and affection of her employers and all with whom she came in touch with. Much of the time that Mrs. Burton was ill, Mrs. Lewis nursed her personally, and daily. Mrs. Robinson, sister of Mr. Lewis, visited her and even when she went to Europe, frequently sent her messages. The friends of the Lewis family called daily to see her. When the family went on their vacation they left Mrs. Burton in the home of Prof. Braye, but under the care of their own family physician, Dr. Porter, and nurse, Miss Whitaker. Mrs. George Lewis came almost daily to see that her every want was supplied. The family was present at the funeral services and followed her to the grave. There were no more sincere mourners present than they. The Lewis family could have been no more kind if she had been near relatives.
