Born in Norfolk, he was a laborer and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Lamberts Point, and was the widower of Barbara Burwell. Survivors include two daughters, Melessia Anita Burwell and Tracey Burwell, both of Norfolk; a son, Melvin Andrew Burwell III of Buckingham County; his father, James E. Burwell Sr. of Norfolk; three sisters, Ernestine Wilson and Blanche Burrus, both of New York, and maternal sister, Agatha Johnson of Norfolk; three brothers, James Burwell Jr. of Portland, Maine, the Rev. Theodore Burwell of New York, and Capt. Rudolph Burwell of Chesapeake; 12 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Barbara Burwell; a special friend, Mevelyn Dickens; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Rosa Mae Jones. A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at First Baptist Church, Lamberts Point, by Bishop Anthony Moses. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . The remains will be ready for viewing at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. The family will receive friends at the home of Capt. Rudolph Burwell, 1501 Pine Grove Lane, Chesapeake. The family will assemble at 11 a.m. at the funeral home for the procession.
