Butler of 2730 Liberia drive died recently in a hospital. A native of Surry county, she was a daughter of Luther and Mrs. Nannie Butler. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute street, Dorcas Class, Secretary of the Missionary group and teacher in the Sunday school. She was also a member of the United Order of Tents, the Household of Ruth 542 and the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA. Also a member of the Sisters of Charity. Miss Butler was a graduate of Hampton Institute and worked many years with the Hampton alumni association. She also attended Norfolk State College. Miss Butler taught for forty years in the rural schools of Virginia and for eighteen years in Southampton County, from which she retired and was honored for her service. She is survived by a niece, Miss Henrietta Butler; a nephew, Henry T. Butler; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Butler, all of South Hill; and a cousin Lee Judkins of Norfolk. Funeral services were held in First Baptist Church, Bute street by the Rev. Paul Simms. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Hale Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
