He was born in Norfolk on Jan. 2, 1931 to Esther Baylor Butler and James Anderson Butler. He graduated from Granby High School in 1948 and went on to attend the Norfolk Division of William & Mary, New Mexico Western College and the University of Washington. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea during the Korean War. While stationed at Lockbourne Air Force Base, after the war, he met his wife, Mary Kathleen. Upon his return to Norfolk, he eventually began his career in the maritime industry. Mr. Butler was vice president, general manager of Southern Stevedoring and later I.T.O., Corporation of Virginia. After leaving I.T.O., he became general manager of Ryan-Walsh Stevedoring in Georgetown, S.C. In 1985 he returned to Norfolk and initiated the local branch office of Ceres Corporation. He was past president of the Propeller Club of Virginia, a member of the Hampton Roads Shipping Association, a member of and past vice president of the National Maritime Safety Association, a member of the Norfolk Sports Club and a member of the Air Force Association. Additionally, Mr. Butler was an avid baseball statistician and a member of the Society of American Baseball Research. He was instrumental in the research for several books on Negro League Baseball. He was a member of Norfolk Yacht & Country Club and Ghent United Methodist Church. His interests included baseball, British military history, ``westerns,'' and most of all his four grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Kathleen Butler, two sons, Corydon B. Butler Jr., DDS, and Craig M. Butler, his daughter-in-law, Allison, and four grandchildren, Corydon III, Cameron, Dane and Mason Butler. Funeral services will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, Wednesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Donald W. Wilson. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery . The family will receive friends in the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Society of America, Virginia Chapter, 2101 Executive Drive, Box 21, Hampton, VA 23666.
