A. Butler, 62, Man Who Built Army Base, Dies Did War Jobs in Russia; Funeral Services Here Monday Morning Col. Millard Angle Butler, 62 years old, well known in this section, died suddenly at Charleston, W. Va., yesterday. He was found dead in bed, according to an Associated Press dispatch. He was supervising engineer for the Defense Plant Corporation at the Institute Synthetic Rubber plant. Charleston Coroner Max Goldman said death was due to a heart attack. Colonel Butler built the great Army Base at Norfolk during World War No. I, and took a leading part in the construction of the Engineers Depot here and Army cantonments in other parts of the Nation, and was sent to Panama for a short period to supervise construction work there. After the war he went to Iraq, Iran, China, India and Russia. He spent several years in the Soviet, and some of the largest construction projects of a military nature there were supervised by him. Returning to the United States, Colonel Butler became chief engineer for the Great Northern Railroad. He was born in Minneapolis, but made Norfolk his home for a number of years. His residence here was at 512 Boissevain avenue. During World War No. I, he was called upon by various civic organizations for speeches in regards to the huge construction projects under his supervision. Colonel Butler was complimented by Newton D. Baker, Secretary of War under Woodrow Wilson during World War No. I, for his work in connection with the construction of the Army Base. Some of the most important activities at the base were made possible much sooner than anticipated because the work there was completed ahead of schedule. Colonel Butler was son of the late Herbert E. Butler and Mrs. Lida Angle Butler. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Browne Butler; four daughters, Misses Bernice ‘ and Beatrice Butler, of Norfolk, Mrs. Robert Baillio, of Princess Anne County, and Mrs. William Robert Bottenberd, of Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. John R. Jaqua and I Mrs. Clarence Mickelson, both of Minneapolis, and four grandchildren. The body will be taken from the residence, 512 Boissevain avenue, to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for funeral services Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary services will be held at the residence tomorrow night at 8 o’clock.
