Butt, a widely known and highly respected citizen, died at his residence, No. 95 Boush Street, yesterday morning at 9:30 o'clock. The deceased at the time of his death was in the 76th year of his age. Prior to the war he carried on the hat business in this city and afterward turned his attention to agricultural pursuits until about ten years ago, when he retired from active business life. For some years he was connected with the management of the Merchants' and Mechanics' Bank and at the time of his demise and for several years before was its president. He was a member of the Granby Street M.E. Church and was a man of many charitable deeds. He leaves a daughter and several grandchildren. The funeral will take place from his late residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. **************************************************************** Mr. Wm. S. Butt died at his home on Boush Street yesterday morning in his 76th year. He was well known and greatly esteemed by a host of friends. At the time of his death he was president of the Merchants' and Mechanics' Savings Bank, which position he had filled for several years. Butt took place at 3 o'clock Sunday evening from the residence, No. 95 Boush Street, and was very largely attended. The service was conducted by Rev. A. Coke Smith, D.D., pastor of the Granby Street M.E. Church, of which the deceased was a member and who came back from Danville to conduct the services. He was assisted by Rev. Richard Gatewood, of the Episcopal Church. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. The casket was handled by eight colored men. The honorary pallbearers were Messrs. John B. Whitehead, J.M. Hodges, W.S. Spratley, Parke Poindexter, J.D. Norsworthy, James Y. Leigh, Col. Wm. B. Rogers and Judge W.H. Burroughs.
