Virginian Pilot and Norfolk Landmark February 8, 1935
John A. Butt, aged 77 years, husband of Laura Wright Butt and son of the late 
John W. and Virginia Lovitt Butt, died yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the 
residence of his son-in-law, Richard H. Garrett, 1514 Morris avenue, "Winona."  
Mr. Butt was a native of Yorktown, and had been a resident of Norfolk for the 
past 70 years. He was a member of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B.P.O. Elks, and 
Rathbone Lodge No. 56, K. of P.
 Besides his wife, Mrs. Laura Wright Butt, he is survived by two daughters, 
Mrs. Richard H. Garrett, and Mrs. C.D. Gilliam, of Norfolk; three sons, John A. 
Butt, Jr., of Baltimore, Md.; Howard L. Butt, and Lloyd W. Butt, of Norfolk; 
two grandchildren, John L. Butt, of Richmond, and Charles Butt, of Baltimore.  
Services will be held at H.D. Oliver's Funeral Apartments, 610-612 East 
Freemason street, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Interment will be in 
Elmwood Cemetery.
