Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - January 14, 1993
Maude Murphy Butt, 90, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, died Jan. 13, 1993, in 
her home. 
Mrs. Butt, born in High Point, N.C., was the daughter of the late Robert Bibb 
Murphy and Willie C. Murphy, and was the widow of H. Frederick Butt Sr. She 
moved to Portsmouth at the age of 10 and following her marriage moved to the 
Ingleside section of Norfolk, where she resided until 1986. She was a member of 
the Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Norfolk 
Story League and was a former member of the Norfolk Woman's Club. 
Survivors include her sons, H. Frederick Butt Jr. and his wife, Norma, of 
Virginia Beach; a granddaughter, Catherine V. Butt of Virginia Beach; and two 
grandsons, James. F. Butt and his wife, Suzan, of Cheltenham, Pa., and Robert S. 
Butt of Richmond. 
A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. in Riverside 
Cemetery with the Rev. Ted David officiating. Also a memorial service will be 
held on Friday at 3 p.m. at Westminster-Canterbury of Virginia Beach, with 
Chaplain Richard Vinson officiating. Friends may join the family at the home of 
Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Butt Jr., 3600 Sea Gull Road, Virginia Beach, this evening 
from 7 to 9 p.m., and also after both services on Friday. Memorial donations may 
be made to the Westminster-Canterbury Fellowship Fund or the Shriners Crippled 
Children's Hospital, c/o Khedive Shrine Temple, Norfolk. Cox Funeral Home is 
handling arrangements.
