The funeral will take place from the above residence THIS (Sunday) AFTERNOON, February 9 at 3 o'clock. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend. **************** The death of William J. Butt at the home of his son-in-law, C. Goffigan, Twenty- ninth Street, Park Place, Friday night, was not only a surprise but a great shock to his numerous friends in Norfolk, where he was born and where he had resided all of his life. Mr. Butt was confined to his home about three weeks with grip during the early part of January, from which he rallied about ten days ago and was seen on the streets. Thursday of last week he was stricken down with pneumonia, from which he never recovered, although he had the best of medical attention. Mr. Butt was a Confederate Veteran and served during the Civil War as a lieutenant in the Huger Battery. After the war he was prominently identified with the local military, being for quite a number of years a lieutenant of the Norfolk City Guard. He was also for a long time connected with the book and stationery business of Hume & Parker, Main Street. For fourteen years Mr. Burt was street inspector of Norfolk, filling the office with credit to himself and to the entire satisfaction of the city authorities. For several years and up to the time of his death he was custodian of the Boush Street Public School. Few if any men had more friends in Norfolk than the deceased. He was a man of splendid qualities of head and heart of genial disposition that made him a favorite with all with whom he came in contact. He is survived by a son, William D. Butt, and a daughter, Mrs. Goffigan. His funeral will be solemnized from the residence at 3 o'clock this afternoon and will be attended by Pickett-Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans; Friendship Conclave No. 2, Heptasophs or S.W.M.; Charity Lodge No. 10, K. of P.; Wyandotte Tribe No. 42, I.O.R. Men and Lafayette Lodge No. 9, I.O.O.F., of which organizations he was a member. The service will be conducted by George E. Booker, of Epworth Methodist Church.
