For thirty-one years she had lived in New York City. Mrs. Butts was born in Wilmington NC in 1874 and received her early training in Norfolk, VA, where she attended public schools. In 1892 she graduated from St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh, NC, with honors. She later taught in Gainsboro NC. In 1896 she married John T. Butts Her activity in the church began during her childhood in Norfolk and she became closely associated with the choir of St. John’s A.M.E. Church, later removing her membership to St. Mark’s Church, New York. Mrs. Butts is survived by a son, James Butts; and two brothers, George B. Durham and David Robinson.
