Born in Norfolk, Mr. Byrdsong was a retired truck driver and mechanic. He was the widower of Elminia Cooks Byrdsong. Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline and Serita Smith, both of Norfolk; seven sons, Raymond Smith, Jonathan Byrdsong, Jerome Byrdsong, all of Norfolk, Lamont Cooks, Tony Cooks, Winston Cooks and James Cooks, all of Camden, N.J.; a sister, Thelma Jones of Virginia Beach; a host of grandchildren; a special friend, Willie Mae Etheridge; and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Ethel Scott; father, Tony James Byrdsong; and two sons, Frank Cooks and Terence Byrdsong. A funeral will be held at noon Monday in Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby Street, by the Rev. Leon Cradle. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. Viewing will be today from noon to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at 3616 Utah Ave. one hour prior to the service for the procession to the chapel.
