Caesar of the 800 block of Virginia Beach Blvd. passed away Feb. 21, 1999, at a local hospital. He was a native of Norfolk and attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar Elementary School, John T. West Junior High School and Booker T. Washington High School. He graduated from Virginia State College in Petersburg, Va., where he also served as an adjunct professor of mathematics. He also pursued further academic studies at the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College, which is now Norfolk State University. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Mr. Caesar had been employed as an insurance agent for Southern Aid Insurance Co., a supervisor for the Department of Parks and Recreation for Norfolk and a supervisor for the Naval Supply Center at the Naval Base, retiring from there after more than 25 years of service. He was an active member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk where he was baptized at the age of 12 years under the pastorate of Dr. O.J. Allen. Mr. Caesar served as a junior missionary during his youth. Later, he faithfully served on and eventually became chairman of the Trustee Board where he served for over 40 years. He was the last surviving founding/charter member of the First Calvary Baptist Church Federal Credit Union which was established in 1946. He also served in the church as an instructor for the Baptist Young People's Union in the late 1950s and the 1960s. He also taught the A.R. Caesar Bible Class for more than 50 years and was instrumental in establishing the Family-Friends Day in the Sunday School Department. His civic activities included: Board member, Norfolk Committee for the Improvement of Education; Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America, Troop First Calvary; member, Board of Directors of Hunton YMCA; and member, Huntersville Model City Planning Committee. Mr. Caesar received a lifetime membership plaque from the NAACP. His Masonic affiliations included Arabia Temple No. 12, Portsmouth, where he served as Potentate in 1965; Alpha and Omega Consistory, where he was a 33rd-degree Mason; and Excelsior Lodge No. 87. Mr. Caesar is survived by his daughter, Ruth Walker; two sons, Leroy Caesar and Henry Caesar; grandchildren, Elder James Poole, the Rev. Thomasine Reid, Sardra Reid, Jacquelyn Sharpe of Philadelphia, Pa., Melody Reid, Mary Lee Alston, Janie Matthews of the Eastern Shore, Rachel Payne, Elder Freddie Arrington, Keith Sivels, Rodger Sivels, George Sivels, Milton Sivels Jr. and Willie Sivels, all of Washington, D.C.; 12 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A Homegoing service will be held at noon Saturday at First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, by Dr. Johnnie L. White Sr. The family will be at 970 Merrimac Ave., Norfolk. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. There will be a wake from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Graves Funeral Home.
