Noxious fumes from a water heater killed 15-year-old Joseph Caggioni yesterday 
afternoon while he was taking a bath in his father's rooming house at 523 Market 
street. The body was found in the bathtub when Louis Caggioni went into the room 
at 4:15 o’clock to see what was keeping his son so long. At that time the boy had 
been in the bathroom about an hour.

Unable to revive the boy, the elder Caggioni sent a messenger to police 
headquarters for assistance. Detective Nowitzky and District Fire Chief Woolard 
hastened around to the Market street rooming house with a pulmotor. Methods of 
artificial respiration proved futile. Life was extinct. Death was attributed to 
accumulation of fumes from the heater.  The flame was burning and the heater was 
hot from top to bottom, which indicated that fumes had escaped and filled the room 
before the boy lighted the burner.

Fumes from instantaneous water heaters have claimed half a dozen victims here in 
the past two years.  Several have been revived by use of the pulmotor.

Young Caggioni was a native of Italy and had been a resident of Norfolk seven 
years.  His parents, Louis and Mrs. Lena Caggioni, live at 318 East Freemason 
street.  His father conducts a rooming house on Market street.

There will be no inquest.  The body was removed to H. D. Oliver's funeral 
apartments, 610-612 East Freemason street, pending funeral arrangements.
