NORFOLK — Miss Katherine Cahill, retired Norfolk teacher and recreation 
supervisor, died Friday at 10:45 a.m. at the residence, 931 Baldwin Ave.

A native of Scranton, Pa., daughter of John and Mrs. Mary Mitchell Cahill, Miss 
Cahill lived for some time in New York. She came to Norfolk as a youngster and 
received her early education at the Leachewood Seminary.

Miss Cahill furthered her education at Columbia University and took courses at the 
College of William and Mary.

Initially, in the pre-World War I days, she taught kindergarten in Brambleton. 
Later, when the city cut out kindergartens, she taught second grade at the old 
Brambleton Elementary School No. 1.

In the late 1920's and early 1930’s, she entered the recreation field for the city 
under City Mgr. I. Walke Truxton’s administration. She served as recreation 
supervisor for the city’s playgrounds for many years. She retired about 1948.

Miss Cahill was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and of the Sodality of 
the Blessed Virgin.

Surviving are three sisters, Miss Mary Cahill, Mrs. Hugh C. Preston and Mrs. 
Harold J. Wright, all of Norfolk; two brothers, Edward H. Cahill of Haverford, 
Pa., and John Cahill Jr. of Norfolk; two nieces and two nephews.

Rosary services will be held Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the H. D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments. The body will be taken from the funeral apartments to Sacred Heart 
Catholic Church for funeral services Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. 
Mary’s Cemetery.
