A native of New York state, he lived here most of his life. He was a son of John and Mrs. Mary Mitchell Cahill and the husband of the late Mrs. Turner Higgins Cahill. He operated the John Cahill Insurance Agency. He was honored by the City of Norfolk for helping bring the city to a leading fire-prevention rank and leader in its class in Virginia. As a captain in World War I, he was wounded and wore the Purple Heart. He was a captain in the Virginia Protective Force, which later was changed to the Virginia State Guard. He was a member of the Ryan Club, Virginia Club and Norfolk Safety Squad for Fire Prevention and a life member of the Norfolk Boat Club. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and president of His Holy Name Society, member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society and Catholic Family and Children's Welfare Society. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Anne Cahill Preston, Mrs. Helen Cahill Wright and Miss Mary Cahill, of Norfolk; and a brother, Major Edward H. Cahill, of Wynnewood, Pa. The Rosary will be said in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments tonight at 7:30 A Requiem Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
