Mr. Caldwell, a Kings Creek, S.C., native, retired from Norfolk Naval Station after 36 years. He was a Methodist and a World War II Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Caldwell; three daughters, Elaine Fennell, Cynthia Caldwell and Helena Caldwell, all of Norfolk; six sons, Nathaniel Caldwell of Phoenix, Ariz., and John R. Caldwell, Erskine Caldwell, Robert Caldwell, Michael Caldwell and Sidney Caldwell, all of Norfolk; two sisters, Meldonia Wallace and Mardie McPherson, both of Baltimore; three brothers, Victor Caldwell of Charlotte, N.C., Claude Caldwell of Baltimore and George Caldwell of North Carolina; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Hale Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard A. Council. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Hale Funeral Home.
