He was born in Norfolk, Va. on November 22, 1930, to the late John T. Callahan and Katherine Walsh Callahan. He was preceded in death by his brother, John T. "Jack" Callahan Jr., of Norfolk, and his sister, Katherine C. Respess, of Charlottesville, Va. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Holy Trinity High School. He graduated from Granby High School in 1949, and attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary. After starting out with Taylor-Parker, he began work as an industrial salesman with The Henry Walke Company, which later became Industrial Supply Corporation. He retired in 2006 after 55 years of loyal service. He was devoted to his customers, even up until his death. He was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3548. He served as Master of Ceremonies for many of their "Knights Out Funarama" shows. He coached championship basketball teams for Holy Trinity and served as a baseball coach for N.A.S. Little League and Senior League teams. He went on to play and coach softball for the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Norfolk Sports Club, where he received the Joe Brown Award for dedicated service. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Cedar Point Country Club and Cypress Point Country Club, where he spent many enjoyable hours on the links. Bill, and his neighbors on "Vatican Circle", were instrumental in starting what is now the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Ocean View. He cherished his Irish roots and always had a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Papa, as he was affectionately known, left a legacy for his children and grandchildren to cherish for a lifetime. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ellen Grace Murray, the love of his life, his seven daughters, Kathleen C. Alberts, and her husband, Dave, Theresa C. Donahoe, and her husband, Stephen, both of Virginia Beach, Mary C. Mani, and her husband, Frank, Susan C. Brittan, and her husband, Buddy, Jean C. Lamay, and her husband, Ken, all of Chesapeake, Margie C. Keller, and her husband, Jim, of Fredericksburg, and Elizabeth C. Berghers and her husband Brandt of North Potomac, Maryland, and his two sons, Patrick M. Callahan, and his wife, Kim, of Norfolk and William W. Callahan Jr., and his wife, Dana, of Virginia Beach. He also leaves 27 grandchildren; David, Amy, Megan, Jason, Jeff, Mary, Katie, Lee, Emily, Tracy, Daniel, Laura, Stefanie, Grace, Ellen, Katherine, Matt, Franko, Sarah, Patrick, Maggie, Elizabeth, Veronica, James, Will, Ben and Caroline Rose, as well as nine great-grandchildren. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt love and gratitude to Dad's caretaker during his last months, Lacenda Rogers. Thank you for enabling the family to keep Dad at home surrounded by his loved ones. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday May 18, at 12 noon in Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Norfolk by the Reverend Father Brian Rafferty. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The Christian Wake service will be said in Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. followed by a visitation with the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association at 4560 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462. H.D.
