OFFICER CALLAHAN DEAD
HE EXPIRED SUDDENLY AT HIS HOME YESTERDAY

Policeman Thomas J. Callahan, the only son of the late J. C. Callahan, died 
suddenly in the rear of his yard, No. 56 Wood Street, about 11 o'clock yesterday 
morning.  Mr. Callahan came off duty at 6 o'clock yesterday morning, apparently in 
the best of health.  At the police station, he laughed and joked with his fellow 
officers and started homeward, accompanied by Officer Caprio.  He reached his 
home, ate a hearty breakfast and indulged in playful amusement with his youngest 
child, a little lady not over 2 years old.  Later, Mr. Callahan went into the yard 
to cut some wood and it was while engaged in this work that he expired suddenly.  
He was found by his wife with his face buried in a pile of coal.

The deceased was a popular and efficient officer, of a jovial disposition, and 
much liked by all his fellow-men.  He was 46 years old and was twice married.  He 
leaves a son and daughter, the offspring of his first marriage, and a wife and 
three small children.

The funeral services will be held from St. Mary's Catholic Church Thursday morning 
at 10 o'clock.  The Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Emerald Beneficial 
Association and the Knights of Columbus, of which the deceased was a member, will 
each attend in a body, as will also a detachment of the police force.

As soon as news of Officer Callahan's death reached police headquarters, the flag 
on the City Hall was placed at half-mast and the bell of the station tolled as a 
mark of respect to the memory of the deceased.
