"Jack" Callahan Jr., 72, of the 1400 block of Manteo St., died Saturday, May 28, 1994. Mr. Callahan was born in Norfolk, Va., and lived here his entire life. He graduated from Maury High School in 1939, where he lettered in basketball and baseball. He attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from VPI in 1946, where he was also president of the student body. He was employed as the Regional Manager of the Engine Division with Fairbanks Morse-Colt Industries and retired after 27 years with the company. Mr. Callahan played American Legion Baseball and in 1946 coached Norfolk's American Legion team to the regional finals. He coached the Norfolk-William and Mary (now Old Dominion University) basketball team to a 21-8 record in 1947-1948 and also coached the baseball team that year. He also worked for approximately 25 years with the Bluebird Park Little League and Parochial League, serving as president of both and a coach of both. In 1971 his boys basketball team from Sacred Heart School won the regular season championship. In the late 1970's Mr. Callahan single-handedly maintained the survival of The Tidewater League, a sandlot baseball league. Mr. Callahan was named Sportsman of the Year in 1981 by the Norfolk Sports Club and received the 17th annual Bud Metheny Award from the Old Dominion University Baseball Program in February 1994. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Norfolk Sports Club, the Ryan Club, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), the Harbor Club and the Mallory Country Club. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Anne Marie Sullivan Callahan; a daughter, Mary Margaret Callahan Lyons of Norfolk; four sons, John T. Callahan III of Arlington, Va., Francis Sullivan (Sully) Callahan of Norfolk, Michael Joseph Callahan of Westfield, N.J., and Robert Patrick Callahan of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Katherine Callahan Respess of Charlottesville, Va.; a brother, William Walsh Callahan of Virginia Beach; and nine grandchildren. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Fr. John J. Dorgan. Interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 30, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
