Edward H. Cannon, 93, died at home on March 2, 2018, after a brief illness. A 
lifelong resident of the Tidewater area, he was the son of Michael J. and Margaret 
Forrest Cannon of Norfolk. He was a lifelong Catholic and founding member of 
Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach. He was involved with many ministries 
within the church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Doris Garrett 
Cannon; daughter, Judith C. Slaski; son, Thomas H. Cannon; a sister; two brothers; 
two half-brothers; and granddaughter, Gelseigh Karl-Cannon.
Ed is survived by his wife of 24 years, Constance C. Cannon; daughter, Cheryl 
Hummer (Gary); son, Michael Cannon; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 
step-daughters, Teri Williams (Brent) and Michelle Black; step-sons, Mark Rimarski 
(Amy) and John Rimarski (Angela); seven step-grandchildren; six step-great-
grandchildren; and a host of other special family and friends.
Ed attended Maury High School and was the youngest apprentice at the Norfolk Naval 
Shipyard in 1942. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, then returned to 
finish his career at the Shipyard in the engineering department. After his 
retirement in 1980, he worked for CDI Marine in Portsmouth for 10 years. Ed always 
enjoyed fishing and traveling and had visited all 50 states, Europe, Central and 
South America and Mexico. He and Connie loved dancing, art exhibits, concerts, and 
the theater. Many family and friends have beautiful furniture items lovingly 
crafted by Ed. He was a true Renaissance man who will be greatly missed.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 11 a.m. at 
Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, with a reception 
to follow. A gathering of family and friends will take place one hour prior to the 
Mass. Ed will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 3000 Church St, 
Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Social 
Ministry food pantry of Church of the Ascension or WHRO Public Media (whro.org).
