J. CANNON, POPULAR POLICE OFFICER, DIES LONG ILLNESS FATAL TO WIDELY KNOWN SERGEANT; WORK LAUDED BY CHIEF Sergt. Michael Joseph Cannon, 46, member of the Norfolk police division for 16 years, died at a local hospital last night at 9:01 o'clock, after a long illness. At one time, he served as commanding officer of the Third Precinct, and he also had served as head of the detective bureau. Sergeant Cannon never returned to duty in the police department after last December 16, when he suffered a severe burn on the right hand while taking the radiator cap off a radio car at Ocean View. While he was off duty, he became ill and had been confined to his home for several months. Last June 19, he was granted a leave of absence and went to Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He was a patient there for about three weeks, then returned home, and was restored to duty November 6. Sergeant Cannon was one of the most popular men in the department and had served in many capacities. He was promoted to sergeant in 1924, and since, at various times, had headed the detective bureau and served on the vice squad and as assistant commanding officer of the then First Police District. PRAISED BY CHIEF Chief of Police, John F. Woods, who had been a close personal friend of Sergeant Cannon for a number of years, said last night that he was one of the most capable men in the department, was of high character and readily accepted responsibility. Sergeant Cannon was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. He was the son of Mrs. Ida I. and the late Michael J. Cannon. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Margaret Forrest Cannon, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Mary M. Cannon; five sons, M.J., Jr., James E., E. H., Forrest and Richard Cannon; a brother, William J. Cannon; his mother and five grandchildren, all of Norfolk. The body was taken to the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Avenue, pending funeral arrangements. D. - At a local hospital, Saturday, May 21st, 1938, at 9:01 o'clock p.m., Sergeant Michael Joseph Cannon, N.P.D., husband of Mrs. Margaret Forrest Cannon and son of Mrs. Ida I. and the late Michael J. Cannon, in the 47th year of his age. Services at the chapel of the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, No. 1501 Colonial Avenue, Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary services at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments this (Monday) evening at 8 o'clock. SERGT. MICHAEL JOSEPH CANNON - Funeral services for Sergeant Cannon, popular member of the Norfolk Police Division and husband of Mrs. Margaret Forrest Cannon, who died Saturday night at a local hospital, were held at the chapel of the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments this morning at 11 o'clock, with the Rev E. A. Brosnan, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, of which Sergeant Cannon was a member,. officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. ---------- The Rev. Thomas Walsh and the Rev. Paul V. Heller were present. In his address at the conclusion of the serive, Father Brosnan spoke of Mr. Cannon's long and patient suffering with Christian fortitude. During the service, E. Vincent Smith sang, "Benedictus," and "Veni Jesu," with Mrs. James Hughes, organist. There was a very large attendance and a profusion of floral offerings. The casket was covered with a pall of Easter lilies, pink carnations, baby's breath and ferns. Nonorary pallbearers were Judge R. B. Spindle, Jr., Judge Clyde H. Jacob, Col. Charles B. Borland, Chief John H. Woods, Chief Thomas...
