CANNON NORFOLK - Michael J. Cannon, formerly of 1015 Brandon Ave., died Nov. 17, 2004, at Autumn Care, Great Bridge, in Chesapeake. Born June 6, 1913, in Memphis, Tenn., he came to Norfolk as a small child to be raised by his grandparents. He was the son of the late Michael J. Cannon, II, and Bessie Tillett Cannon Smoyer. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Marie "Peggy" McLaughlin Cannon. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He was past grand knight of Norfolk Council No. 367 and Past Faithful Navigator of the Fr. M. J. O'Keefe Assembly, Fourth Degree. Mike was a devoted family man with a strong work ethic. He had a long and rewarding career in the paint and hardware business, spanning more than 60 years, and reluctantly retired at age 80 from Door Engineering Co. in 1993. He is survived by his six daughters, Marie O'Brien, of Norfolk, Patricia Murrell, of Fredericksburg, Jean Musick, of Charlottesville, Ann Gelardi, of Virginia Beach, Theresa Morton, of Camden, N.C., and Michele Dougherty, and her husband, Michael, of Virginia Beach; two sons, John M. Cannon, Sr., and wife, Ila Ann, of Chesapeake, and Joseph P. Cannon, and wife, Teresa, of Tampa, Fla.; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Mike was predeceased by a brother, James E. Cannon, and is survived by one sister, Peggy Donlon, of Virginia Beach and three brothers, Forrest "Joe" Cannon, of Tampa, Fla., Richard, and Edward, and his wife, Connie, both of Chesapeake. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Eda (sic) McLaughlin, of Clearwater, Fla.; a dear cousin, Frances Paulin Tillett Gregory, of Shiloh, N. C.; and a host of loving relatives and friends. A celebration of Mike's life, with Monsignor Thomas Caroluzza officiating, will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk, at 7n p.m. Tuesday, followed by a reception for family and friends in the church commons. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk. Funeral arrangements are by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church. Mike was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a humble, kind man who treated everyone with the greatest respect. His motto in life was, "Always treat people the way you wish to be treated." His love and kindness was felt by many and he will be dearly missed by all those blessed to know him.
