Canoles Jr., 83, died March 17, 2009. Mr. Canoles was born in Norfolk and was a lifelong resident of this city. He was a founder and senior member of the law firm of Kaufman and Canoles. Mr. Canoles was educated in Norfolk public schools and graduated from Maury High School in 1943. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of William and Mary and graduated with honors from law school at the University of Virginia where he was a member of the editorial board of the Virginia Law Review. A fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the American Bar Foundation, the Virginia Bar Foundation and a member of the Order of the Coif, he was frequent lecturer at many legal education forums. He was also a certified public accountant and practiced that profession early in his life. From 1984 through 1987, he was director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and the chairman of its board for three years and was a frequent speaker on subjects related to central banking and monetary economics. He served as the chairman of the board of Sentara Alternative Delivery Systems Inc. from 1984 through 1994. Mr. Canoles became a board member of the Beazley Foundation in 1991 and remained active until the time of his death. Mr. Canoles was a member of the Christadelphian Church, having served on its managing board, as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and as a regular Sunday morning speaker for many years. The son of Leroy and Vera Canoles, he was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Canoles Redmond. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marian Lewis-Jones Canoles; four daughters, Claudia C. Troutman and her husband Lex, Alison C. Parks and her husband Anthony, Joanne C. Benedict and her husband John, Marian C. M'Coy and her husband Bill; and eight grandchildren, Hunter, Marian, Evan, Anthony, Grayson, Sheffield, Caroline and Emily. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Canoles Bruce. The family is grateful to Dr. Tom Grant and Dr. Randy Garnet. We are especially indebted to the staff at Harbor's Edge who took such wonderful care of Mr. Canoles and his family during his last days. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Elmwood Cemetery. There will be a reception immediately following at Harbor's Edge, 1 Colley Ave., Norfolk. H.D.
