Capps, 95, of Hampton, died Sunday night in Boston, Mass. She was born in Norfolk on Sept. 14. 1861, the daughter of Enoch and Mrs. Sarah Anne Whitehurst Capps, and growing up in this city, was educated at Leache-Wood Seminary. Upon Miss Leache’s and Miss Wood’s retirement from teaching, she joined them in Italy, where she lived for a number of years. Returning to this country, she became a member of the faculty of Hampton College, a school for girls founded by the late Miss Fitchett, where she taught French and Italian. When the college was closed, she continued to live in Hampton, making her home from many years with the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Darling at Cedar Hall. She was a member of St. John Episcopal Church, and took an active part in the religious and cultural life of the community. Her ashes will be brought to Norfolk for burial in the family lot in Elmwood Cemetery. Miss Capps is survived by five cousins, Miss Lucille E. Shipp, Mrs. L.T. Davis, Mrs. Dale D. Hinman, Miss Josephine Johnson and William R. Hemingway, off of this city. Committal services to be conducted by the Rev. Carter H. Harrison of Hampton, will be announced later.
