Mr. Carlin was born July 27, 1915, in Springfield, Mass., the son of the late William and Marcella Carlin. Our dad is singing with the angels. He joined them on July 8, 2010, just 19 days before his 95th birthday. Always smiling and singing, he truly enjoyed being a member of the resident's choir at Marian Manor, where he resided. He was a man of many, many talents. He had been a licensed charter boat captain with his vessel named "Capt. Jack." In his earlier days, he had been a mechanic, a truck driver, a farm worker, a circus worker and a tool and dye maker and supervisor. Mr. Carlin was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Norma M. Carlin, and his son, John J. Carlin Jr. Survivors include his daughters, Nancy Castaldo, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Diana "Dee" Quigley, of Virginia Beach; and daughter-in-law, Gail Carlin, of Gum Spring, Va.; seven grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, with another one on the way. His passing will leave such a void in both the world and in our family. There will never be another like him. His love was like no other. He was a truly wonderful dad and poppy. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church by Father Cristiano Brito. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. There will be a Rosary recited by The Legion of Mary at the funeral home Monday at 6 p.m. followed by visitation until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association or the American Heart Association. Sing on Daddy, sing on. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Chesapeake Chapel, is handling arrangements.
