Alfonso Linwood ``Biddy'' Carney Sr., 74, of the 800 block of Hayes St., a local
business owner for more than 50 years, died Feb. 16, 1993, at his home after a
long illness.

Mr. Carney, a native of Norfolk, was the son of the late Charles H. and Viola
Hill Carney. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He graduated from Booker
T. Washington High School in 1937 and became a licensed barber shortly
afterward. In 1954 he opened Carney's Barber Shop in the Huntersville section of
Norfolk and operated it until his death. He was a member of the Hiawatha Social
and Beneficial Association, the Bachelor Benedict Club, Metro Anglers and the
Lindenwood Civic League. He was a veteran and was honorably discharged from the
Army in 1942.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee Carney; three daughters, Dr. Marcia D.
Carney of Richmond, Yvette R. Carney of Baltimore and Greta Carney-Lee of
Virginia Beach; two sons, Alfonso L. Carney Jr. of New Rochelle, N.Y., and
Charles Emerson Carney of Norfolk; grandchildren, Alison L. Carney and Alfonso
L. Carney III; daughter-in-law, Dr. Cassandra Henderson Carney of New Rochelle,
N.Y.; and son-in-law, Willie A. Lee of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Grace Episcopal Church by the
Rev. Joseph N. Green Jr. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be
from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in
the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
