Carpenter Jr., 83, passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, in his residence. Born in Lincolnton, N.C., he was a retired chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 99. He was an electrical inspector for Virginia Beach and then began his electrical business. He was also an avid gardener, hunter and also an honorary member of the Cross Roads Hunt Club in North Carolina. Samuel is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean Carpenter; five children, Edward P. Carpenter, Linda M. Carpenter, both of Virginia Beach, Brenda Williams of Texas, Debra Moss, Donna Carpenter, both of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Minnie Houlk, Audrey Smith, Ruth Gillenwater and Betty Caldwell, all of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Ernest Carpenter and John Carpenter, both of Virginia Beach; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, William C. Carpenter. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or a charity of one's choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
