"Jack" Carr, 75, of Roberta Drive, died peacefully in his home Tuesday, April 15, 1997, of liver cancer. He was born in Norfolk and was a lifelong resident the Hampton Roads area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Bielawski Carr who died in 1986 of multiple sclerosis. Jack graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943, and was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1956 with the rank of lieutenant commander and submarine officer. He went to work until his retirement in 1989 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydocks. Jack was a fun loving person who loved sports. He authored the book, "Advanced Table Tennis" and coached several World and Junior World Table Tennis Champions. He also served many years on the executive committee of the U.S.T.T.A. In addition to winning a gold medal for table tennis at the 1996 National Senior Olympics, Jack was very active in tennis, swimming, bowling and truly enjoyed ballroom dancing. Survivors include two sons, John E. Carr II of Philadelphia, D. Mitchell Carr, and his wife, Lisa; and two grandchildren, Leslie and Tyler of Sterling, Va. and a very special friends of many years, Charlene MacPherson. A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Elmwood Cemetery by the Rev. Robert Eaton of the Union Baptist Church in Newport News. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Jack will be remembered most for his never-ending smile, kindness and deep generosity. His friends encouraged to gather on their own after the service. Jack will be deeply missed. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
