Carroll, 86, one of the earliest holders of a mortician’s license in Virginia, and associated with the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments the last 56 years, died yesterday at 4:30 a.m. in De Paul Hospital. A son of Patrick Henry and Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Carroll, he was a native of New York City, and had been a resident of Norfolk since 1879. He resided at 1000 Baldwin Ave. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society, and was a charter and life member of Norfolk Council 367, Knights of Columbus. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Carroll Hightower, of Norfolk, and Mrs. J. Reid Mercer, of Richmond; two sons, Charles F. Carroll, of Richmond, and Raymond J. Carroll, of Norfolk; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The body will be taken from the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for funeral services tomorrow at 11 a. m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
