Carstarphen, whose untimely death we have before noticed. The services were conducted according to the solemn ritual of the Catholic church, the Rev. Father Matthew O'Keefe presiding. The remains of the deceased were then conveyed to the Catholic burying ground, outside of the city limits, the distance being so great that the firemen, in a body, did not proceed to the grounds. From The Norfolk Post: LOCAL INTELLIGENCE THE "WHITE HOUSE" - A delegation of gentlemen from the Colony of Virginia and its dependencies - Fortress Monroe, Deep Creek, Peddles Rest, Mobjack Bay and various other points, made an official visit to the "White House," on Market Square, last evening, and were entertained by the President of the establishment, Mr. Richard U. Carstarphen, who bade them welcome to his new establishment - which, he said, had been reconstructed upon the soundest principles of political economy and good liquors. Speeches were made by several of the delegates, and there was a very pleasant season of conviviality. Mr. Carstarphen told several of his best stories, and some gentlemen of the press sang a couple of songs - one gentleman connected with the "Fourth Estate" was particularly happy in singing "Oft In the Stilly Night" - which was loudly encored. After many other pleasing ceremonies, the delegation took its departure, expressing themselves highly delighted with their reception and treatment at the "White House," which is unquestionably a very popular resort for the bibulous politicians of Market Square. We are not talking of the "White House" in Washington. That's become too common - everybody goes there now. It is the new, neat popular saloon recently opened under this name on Market Square by Mr. Richard U. Carstarphen. It is a recherche resort - a very quiet and pleasant place - where Richard is always himself, and conducts his business on the advalorem system.
