Carter, a native of Norfolk, biology professor and faculty member of Valdosta State College 33 years, died Wednesday in Pineview General Hospital after a short illness. She lived at 1602 Boone Drive. She received a B.S degree from the College of William and Mary and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia. She taught briefly in Norfolk public schools before joining the Valdosta State faculty in 1935. Valdosta College President S. Walter Martin praised Dr. Carter as “a dedicated teacher who worked unceasingly for the over-all development of young people." She was listed in American Men of Science. She was a member of American Association of University Professors, American Academy of Applied Sciences, American Institute of Biological Science, American Society of Biologists, Georgia Association of Science, American Microscopical Association, Sigma Delta Epsilon and Sigma XI. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Anne Carter Cooke of Williamsburg and Miss Virginia I. Carter of Charlottesville, and a brother, Cecil McLean Carter of Norfolk. A funeral service will be held today at 11:30 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church. After cremation, final rites will be conducted in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Valdosta State College foundation.
