Carter died at the residence of his son-in-law, James Lambert, Ocean View, yesterday, in his 86th year. He was a Confederate veteran and was well known throughout Tidewater Virginia. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James Lambert and Mrs. J. M. Commander, and three sons, W. I., R. D., and George M., all of Norfolk; two brothers, James Carter, of Philadelphia, Pa., and John Carter, of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Ella Williams, of Jacksonville, Fla.; thirty-two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at H. D. Oliver’s funeral apartments at 4 o’clock this afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. J. S. Meredith, of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, being largely attended. There weerre many floral offerings. The burial was in Elmwood, the pallbearers being Charles White, W. D. Farley, H. V. Lineback, H. T. Cruser, Guy S. Jackson, W. L. Gunn.
