NORFOLK — The Rev. Vincent A. Carty, a Roman Catholic religious leader who has 
spent the past 25 years with Christ the King Catholic Church, died Sept. 21, 1987, 
in a hospital. He was 88.

The Rev. Carty, a native of Norfolk, served most of his ministry in Rapid City, 
S.D., and for 20 years was the pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Morristown, S.D. 
While in South Dakota, he had an Indian reservation as part of his parish. He 
returned to Norfolk in 1963 and celebrated his Silver Sacerdotal Jubilee into the 
priesthood with Christ the King Catholic Church.

The Rev. Carty attended St. Mary’s Academy in Norfolk and Belmont Abbey College, 
Belmont, N.C., before he went into the seminary. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s 
Seminary, Baltimore, Md., and St. Bonaventure Seminary, St. Bonaventure, N.Y. He 
was ordained in 1933 in Buffalo, N.Y., and celebrated his first high Mass in 
Norfolk St. Mary’s, his home church.

Survivors include a sister, Louise Carty of Norfolk.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Christ the 
King Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas Long.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at 10 a.m. Thursday.

A Christian wake service will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, 
at 8 p.m. today.

The family will assemble in 3401 Willard Place, Norfolk.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 3341 Tidewater 
Drive, Norfolk, 23509.
