Cham Chamberlaine, aged 72 years. The funeral will take place Friday afternoon at 5 1/2 o'clock, from the First Pre Presbyterian Church in this city. Friends and acquaintances of the family are inv invited to attend. DEMISE OF R. H. CHAMBERLAINE We are called upon to chronicle this morning the death of R. H. Chamberlaine, Esq., one of the most valuable and highly esteemed citizens of this city, and one whose death will cause a deep felt sorrow to permeate throughout every portion of the community ad every class of society. The sad event occurred yesterday morning at 9 o'clock at the family residence just outside the city limits, and the announcement was a severe shock to all who were acquainted with the deceased or familiar with his eminent worth and usefulness as a citizen. Mr. Chamberlaine had been unwell for about ten days, but had nearly recovered, and on Tuesday evening he was at his place of business down town discharging the duties of his daily avocation. Yesterday morning he expressed himself as feeling quite well and ate heartily at breakfast. Shortly after the meal, however, he complained of a sense of suffocation, and in a few moments had breathed his last. He was affected by a complication of diseases, prominent among which was heart disease, which latter is thought to have been the immediate cause of his death. Mr. Chamberlaine was a native of Norfolk, and was raised here, having at the death of his parents been adopted by his grandmother, Mrs. Bruce, who lived for many years on Cumberland Street. He was a descendant of an old and excellent family of people, his grandfather having served with distinction in the Virginia navy during the revolutionary war. Upon being thrown upon his own resources, Mr. Chamberlaine displayed excellent business capacity, and during his long life accumulated an independent fortune. He married in early life a Miss Wilson, of New York, and reared a large family of children, several of his sons being now among Norfolk's useful business men. During his life the deceased conducted several branches of business and finally engaged in that of banking accepting the position of cashier of the Farmer's Bank which he held for many years. He afterwards engaged in the broker's business, which he prosecuted before and after the war with one of his sons, and subsequently merged into the Citizen's Bank, now in existence and of which he was president at the time of his death. Some years after the death of his first wife Mr. Chamberlaine married a Miss Lony Lony, of Baltimore, by whom he had several children, and who survives him. Although always a prominent man in the community, Mr. Chamberlain never held a public office except that of councilman, where he served the city with fidelity, and used his financial ability with beneficial results in the arrangement of her finances. He was a devoted husband, an affectionate father, a good citizen, and a pure man, and his departure from this life may be looked upon as a blow to the welfare of the community.
