Champaco, 86, of the 300 block of Bradford Ave., died June 6, 2007, in his home. He was born in Merizo, Guam, the son of the late Venancio C. Manalisay and Asuncion Champaco. Mr. Champaco retired as a mess specialist chief from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service to his country. He joined the Navy Aug. 1, 1939, serving on the USS Saratoga, then going aboard the USS Yorktown CV-5 in 1940 and was aboard during the battle of Coral Sea and Midway, where he survived the bombing of the ship and was picked up three hours later. He spent the rest of the war patrolling the Atlantic. His final duty station was CINCLANT Fleet BOQ and then the Northampton. Mr. Champaco was also a retired contractor. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church where he sang with the choir, The Knights of Columbus No. 3548, the Fleet Reserve Association BR 5, the Coral Sea Association and the Yorktown CV-5 Club. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bertha Kellogg Champaco; seven daughters, Rita Duke and her husband Bill, of Odessa, Texas, Diane Collins and her husband Stephen, of Hampton, Theresa Champaco of Norfolk, Cecilia Myers and her husband Raymond, of Chesapeake, Bertha Pinkerton, Mary McClusky and her husband Michael, all of Norfolk and Virginia Moravec and her husband Michael, of Maryland; and four sons, Venancio Champaco and his wife Mary Kay, of Virginia Beach, Jesse Champaco of Norfolk, David Champaco and his wife Sandra, of Chesapeake and Martin Champaco and his wife Teresa, of Chesapeake. Mr. Champaco is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Newman of Norfolk; 30 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rita Aglubat of Guam; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk by Father David Nott. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to a charity of choice.
