He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Nancy Outland Chandler, who was his lifelong sweetheart. He was born on July 26, 1924, and was the son of the late Dr. Webster Monroe Chandler and the late Helen Deal Chandler. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Deal Chandler, his sister, Nancy Fairfax Chandler, and his son, William Outland Chandler. An honor graduate of Maury High School in 1942, Webster (Web) enrolled at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), but was called to serve his country as a U.S. Army Officer in World War II. After his military duty, he returned to VMI. Web and Nancy were married in 1948, and he earned his degree in electrical engineering in 1949. Web was awarded the Jackson Hope Medal for the highest overall academic record in the three classes graduated from VMI in 1949. In 1950, the Chandlers went to Cambridge, MA, where Web earned a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He returned to VMI and taught for two years, but in 1952, his country called again. He served in the U.S. Signal Corps, and eventually was deployed to the Korean War. Back home in Norfolk, Web turned his attention to his engineering career and his community. He founded his own company, Webster M. Chandler, Consulting Engineers PC., which was still in business at the time of his death. Many people in Norfolk benefited from Web’s love of electrical engineering, and in 1979, he was named Engineer of the Year of the Tidewater Chapter of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. He loved solving problems and focused on accidents and casualties both on land and on sea, which he continued throughout his long and rich life. Web was a member, former vestryman and Senior Warden of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. He held many leadership roles in the Episcopal Church, including service as a Delegate to the General Convention for several years. Web was Past President of the Norfolk Rotary Club and Past President of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. He served as Past Chairman of the Tidewater Chapter of the American Red Cross and was a Past Member of the Regional Advisory Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Old Dominion University. He was Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Norfolk Public Library System, Past Chairman and Current Member of the City of Norfolk Board of Zoning Appeals, and an active member of the Folly Creek Corporation, Cedar Island. He also served on the Advisory Board of The Chrysler Museum. Web’s greatest joy came from his large and loving family. In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his daughter, Nancy Deal Chandler and her husband, Paul Pomplun of Inverness, IL; his son, Webster Monroe Chandler III and his wife, Lisa Smith Chandler of Norfolk, VA; and his son, John Maddox Chandler and his wife, Charlotte Webb Chandler of Norfolk. He has five wonderful granddaughters, Whitney Deal Chandler of Norfolk, Brynn Chandler Noel of Santa Cruz, CA and her husband, Will Noel, and Jane Carter Chandler, Virginia Maddox Chandler, and Nancy Webb Chandler of Norfolk. Web is also survived by his dear brother-in-law, Grover Cleveland Outland Jr. and sister-in-law, Teancy Mathews Outland. He enjoyed a loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and close friends. This lively family with its ebullience and energy is a fitting legacy to Web, a man of honor, intelligence, integrity, and a citizen soldier. He was a GentleMan. A memorial service will be held in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Wednesday, July 18, at 11 a.m. A private interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery.
