Born in Creswell, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Alice Vista Smith Woodley and Edgar Swain Woodley. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gilbert R. Asby, and her second husband, A. Hugh Chapman. She is survived by her sons, Gilbert R. Asby, Jr., (Carrie Savage) of Richmond, Virginia, and Thomas E. Asby (Kathy Tugwell) of Tequesta, Florida, her daughter, Alice W. Asby of Cambridge, Massachusetts, her stepson, John S. Chapman (Cindie) of Madison, Alabama, her grandchildren, Courtney Worthington (Chad), Meredith Asby, Lauren Asby, Olivia Asby, Brian Chapman, and Cory Chainsman (Melanie), four great-grandchildren, Bryson, Colston, Breckin, and Cullen Worthington, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Edgar S. Woodley, Jr., Preston S. Woodley, Robert D. Woodley, and Samuel F. Woodley. She received her A.A. from Saint Mary’s College, her B.A. from Mary Washington College (now University of Mary Washington), and her M.Ed. from the College of William & Mary. She retired from the Norfolk Public School System as a job placement coordinator. Prior to that, she was the guidance director at Lake Taylor High School. She was a long- time member of Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church, a member of the Elizabeth River Woman’s Club, the Margaret Roper Moss Circle of The King’s Daughters, and a bridge club, which was formed over fifty years ago. The family will receive friends at a visitation on Friday evening from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Norfolk, with Rev. Fr. Dale Hurst officiating. Burial will be private in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
