She was a native of Norfolk and the daughter of the late James E. and Katie Toliver Roberts. She was the widow of Claude Chapman. Mrs. Chapman was a 50-year member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church. She was a former Sunday School teacher, a member of the Golden Heirs, the Ora Knight Missionary Society and the Bank Street Booters. She was a member of Lydia Jewels Tent No. 265 of the United Order of Tents. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1935, she received her undergraduate degree from Bennett College. She did additional work at Virginia State College (now university). She was very active in the Bennett College Alumni Association. Mrs. Chapman began her career as an educator in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and retired from the Norfolk public schools after 26 years, serving at John T. West and Roberts Park Elementary schools. She is survived by cousins, Evelyn Brann, Marion Austin, Robin Toliver, Wynter Toliver and Donovan Toliver. A funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, 7036 Chesapeake Blvd., with the Rev. Cedric Kirkland Harris officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Service. The United Order of Tents memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 6 p.m. Thursday. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hope for the Children of Haiti, 50 Cross St., Winchester, MA 01890. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Odessa Harris, the Rev. Cedric Kirkland Harris and the members of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church for the care and attention given Mrs. Chapman during her illness.
