Norfolk - Funeral services were held at Saint Mary’s Pentecostal Church recently 
for the Rev. John W. Chavis of 1416 43rd street, Norfolk, who died at his home 
in his 71st year. The pastor, the Rev. Mrs. M. E. Bray, officiated. Born in 
Raleigh, NC, Rev. Mr. Chavis had lived in Norfolk 40 years and was widely known 
in North Carolina and Virginia.

Rev. Chavis was one of the ministers sponsoring the Saint Mary’s Pentecostal 
Holiness Church, corner of Goff and Griffin streets. He did considerable work at 
the church and was often called upon to conduct revivals.

The survivors include Rev. Chavis’ wife Eloise Chavis; two daughters, Mrs. Viola 
Morris of Durham, NC and Mrs. Alonia Jones of Columbus OH; two brothers, one 
sister, and five grandchildren.
