Son of Mary and Joseph Checchia, he was born and raised in Utica, NY. He attended Notre Dame High School in Utica and moved on to Notre Dame University in the ROTC program. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the US Army for eight years, followed by an esteemed career with Defense Intelligence Agency, which brought him to Norfolk as the DIA Liaison to Joint Forces Command. He earned Masters degrees from National War College and Syracuse University. After retiring from government service, Mark established CheckMark Strategies, providing consultation services to government contractors. He also worked for NATO as a featured publication writer. He has been a lecturer in the Political Science department at ODU since 2013, always encouraging his students to be critical thinkers and look beyond the newsfeed for truth. Mark was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband and father. He is predeceased by his parents and his beloved sister, Sandy Maher, who most certainly was there to welcome him with open arms when he passed. Mark is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and daughters, Sophia and Brandi (Mike); sisters, Judy Goerlitz (Christopher) and Carol Crawford; niece, Elizabeth Maher Funk (Tom) and nephews, Stephen Maher, Jeffrey Blake Maher (Eric), and Josh Maher (Alicia) and their wonderful children. Mark was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Notre Dame Alumni Club and Ryan Club and had a great time with his ODU colleagues competing in World Quest. He had a quick wit and sharp mind full of facts and stats about the world. Always happy to lend a helping hand, Mark was a truly great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family and friends. He was a selfless man whose passing dealt a stinging blow to the hearts of his loved ones. His ability to sacrifice, provide, support, forgive, and love will be forever engrained in those who knew him well. Funeral services will be private. In honor of Mark’s memory, the family suggests making a donation to SeriousFun Children’s Network (https://seriousfun.org).
