Cherry, 63 years old, well known and with many friends in Norfolk, died yesterday morning at his home, 519 River Avenue. Captain Cherry had lived in Norfolk for the past 36 years. He was a member of the Master, Mates and Pilots Association, Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, 32, Friendship Conclave, No. 2, Heptasophs and Masons. He is survived by a widow, one daughter, Mrs. Stanley Downey and one sister, Mrs. Samuel Tyree, all of Norfolk. The funeral will take place at the residence at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Services will be conducted by Rev. F.W. Putney, of Central Baptist Church and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. ***************************************************************************** The funeral of Captain James Lewis Cherry, who died Thursday, was held at the residence, 519 River[view] Avenue yesterday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. F. W. Putney of Central Baptist Church. There was a large attendance. Among the magnificent floral tributes were a "gates ajar" from the Charles Gruin Transportation Company, a pillow from the Henderson Transportation Company, a pillow from the Masters, Mates and Pilots' Association; a pillow from the I.O.O.F., a cluster of carnations from the Heptasophs; a "square and compass" from the Masons, and a "keystone" from the Royal Arch Chapter. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. The pallbearers were as follows: Captain L. A. Nills and Frank Norton, from the Masons; T. E. McCiskie and J. L. Joyner, from the I.O.O.F.; E. W. Bray and W. P. Johnson, from the Heptasophs; R. W. Stephens and George W. P. Overman, from the Masters, Mates and Pilots' Association, and J. P. Dukes and Captain A. J. Hudson, citizens.
