He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Woodmen of the World, and Loyal Order of Moose. Survivors include three stepsons, Edward Lee Powell Jr., Alvin Morris Powell, and Robert Louis Powell of Portsmouth; a sister, Miss Lillian Cherry of Norfolk; two brothers, Sidney Cherry of Chesapeake and Linwood Cherry of Virginia Beach; and eight grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Melvin S. Hester. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Norfolk, with Sturtevant Funeral Home in charge. The family will leave from the home of Robert L. Powell of 412 Leavell Road, Portsmouth.
