Virginian-Pilot  May 27, 1917
The funeral of Captain James Lewis Cherry, who died Thursday, was held at the 
residence, 519 River avenue, yesterday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. F. W. 
Putney of Central Baptist church. There was a large attendance. Among the 
magnificent floral tributes were a “gates ajar" from the Charles Gruin 
Transportation Company, a pillow from the Henderson Transportation Company, a 
pillow from the Masters, Mates and Pilots' association; a pillow from the I. O. O. 
F., a cluster of carnations from the Heptosophs; a "square and compass" from the 
Masons, and a "keystone" from the Royal Arch chapter. Interment was in Elmwood 
cemetery. The pallbearers were as follows: Captain L. A. Nills and Frank Norton, 
from the Masons; T. E. McCiskie and J. L. Joyner, from the I. O. O. F.; E. W. Bray 
and W. P. Johnson, from the Heptosophs; R. W. Stephens and George W. P. Overman, 
from the Masters. Mates and Pilots’ association, and J. P. Dukes and Captain A. J. 
Hudson, citizens.
